Midwesterner. Life-long resident of central Illinois.
Conventional small midwestern town working-class childhood flavored by somewhat sheltered only-child isolation.
Development of intense imaginative and creative preoccupations in the areas of music, drawing, painting, and theatrical performance through acquisition of numerous audio recordings (including Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Right Said Fred, The Cure, Primus, Nirvana, Guns n Roses, Prince, The Flaming Lips, Sebadoh, Sonic Youth and the Encino Man soundtrack), viewing of certain materials (The Kids in the Hall, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Ernest movies, Ren & Stimpy, Clint Eastwood movies), reading of certain materials (Far Side comics, Spin Magazine Alternative Album Guide, Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana), and intense small town latchkey-kid isolation and boredom. Given first electric guitar by uncle, started guitar lessons. Started first “band”, recorded first “album” direct live to cassette at age 11, first “show” at age 13. D.i.y. ambitious tendencies arising out of boredom.
Establishment of deep, solid interests in art, music, psychology, spirituality. Serious experimentations with painting, drawing, collage and photography begin and crest in 1999, waning off slowly. Acquisition of 4-track cassette recorder. Creation of 18+ self-released full-length albums on cassette prior to graduation from high school. Sketch comedy and other experimentations with performance, narratives, and moving imagery captured and edited on VHS systems. Some of this is broadcast via closed-circuit TV @ high school, various forms of encouragement and confusion are elicited from faculty and fellow students. Various d.i.y. art showings arranged. Influential readings: Nietzsche, Aldous Huxley, Herman Hesse, Kurt Vonnegut, Carl Jung, Kahlil Gibran, Alan Watts, Carlos Castaneda. Psychological experimentations of various sorts. Formative travel experiences. First serious romantic relationships; both fraught but beautiful in their own ways.
